Designer Spotlight: LORICK

I don't know about you but im sucker for any fashion secrets. Many of you might already know this tidbit of information but I recently discovered the face behind some of the most fashionable looks on one my favorite series, Gossip Girl & i absolutely had to share for our designer spotlight today!

"The mastermind behind Lorick and Ghost designer for Eleanor Waldorf on Gossip Girl, is Abigail Lorick. Born on Amelia Island, Florida, Abigail knew the South couldn't contain her...

BIO
At the age of 18, she moved to Paris and Milan to model for designers such as Alberta Ferretti and Mossimo while appearing in acclaimed magazines French C'osmopolitan, American Elle and American Harper's Bazaar. Working as a model only enhanced her love of fashion and led her to move in 2003, to New York City to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology while working simultaneously at T.S. Dixin. By 2004, Abigail was designing T.S. Dixin's entire collection. After proving her vision over a few seasons, Abigail's production manager in India, Verma Singh, approached her to create a collection of her own. Quickly thereafter in the Spring of 2007, she conceptualized and launched the Lorick brand." (Source)

Abigail got her Gossip girl gig through connections within the costume staff at Gossip Girl and was approached to be the ghost designer behind Eleanor Waldorf designs and her daughter Blair too.

CN: Did you come from a fashion background?
AL: No. I grew up on an island, although I started buying Vogue in fifth grade.

CN: When did you become a model? AL: I started at fifteen, and truth be told I knew one day I really wanted to be a fashion designer. It was a door into the industry.

CN: What was an influential moment during your modeling days?
AL: Meeting Alberta Ferretti and walking in one of her shows. And seeing models pass out at a presentation that I was in; they started dropping like flies. It was kind of hysterical.

CN: Did modeling lead you to design or was it something you always aspired to do?
AL: It was something I always aspired to do.

CN: You often say the South couldn't contain you, but does the "Southern Belle" legacy influence your taste in fashion?
AL: Yes, it does! We appreciate color and big sweeps. But I knew at age seven, that this is where I wanted to be.

CN: How did you initially get involved with "Gossip Girl?"
AL: Meredith Markworth Pollack (assistant stylist) and Eric Damen are good friends of mine. They actually proposed to the producers that there be a ghost designer behind Elleanor Waldorf. I went in with the collection and met the producers and it was just a great fit.

CN: What was the first outfit that made it onto the show? Who wore it?
AL: It was the "GG" dress. There was an electric blue strapless dress that Blair gave to Jenny, because her mom designed it and she said it was so outdated and "so last season".... Then Jenny tried it on and stared at herself in the mirror. It was great, because the dress was supposed to represent the world that she envied and wanted to be a part of. The dress mentally took her to that world.

CN: Who is your favorite character to dress?
AL: Leighton [Blair Waldorf], of course!

CN:What outfit featured on the show proved to be biggest hit with customers?
AL: The backless dresses that Leighton (Blair) and Blake (Serena van Der Woodsen) wore in the "Bad News Blair" episode.

CN: Do you enjoy the connection the Lorick brand shares with Gossip Girl or do you think it might potentially limit your appeal to other customers?
AL: I enjoy the connection. The "Gossip Girl" team is a great team, it has been an absolute pleasure working with them. Lorick will evolve on it's own accord; we will see if the "Gossip Girl" sticks with us. I believe she will.

CN: Will you be involved next season?
AL: The Lorick brand will always be the brand of Eleanor Waldorf. It is
up to the producers if she will be written in the script.

CN: Gossip Girl loves to play with the distinction between the socialites and artsy hipsters. Do you associate more with the "downtown" or "uptown" fashion and nightlife agenda?
AL: I don't really go above Houston Street. But I do love the clean, chic, old school lines of uptown. A wonderful trait of our Lorick lady is that she is the Uptown girl in a Downtown world by choice...

With the debut of LORICK in Spring 2008, Abigale Lorick became an instant success to this day! Her designs have a retro sensibility that relate beautifully to the modern woman. They are chic yet vintage an i know i would love to where ANY of them.

To this she reply's "She loves playing dress up, she finds it as one of life's greatest pleasures. She wears gloves in the summertime and oyster shells in her hair. She is independent, loves working, loves life, enjoys aging, she is a free spirit, and a delight to have in the room. She enjoys writing thank you notes. AL: She is a modern version of my grandmother. She is found in the women all around me that are pursing their dreams, that is where their real beauty comes from."

With the Haute Couture shows in Paris behind us & the beginning of my own collection underway (will talk about that at a later time) I have collections, designs, pattern work and construction constantly on my mind. It can get overwhelming at times but all those design aspects are KEY when forming a great collection.

Speaking of, i was so inspired by the Haute Couture shows this season. This years looks were very original & truly inspired me.

Do you know what i Haute Couture?

Haute Couture means "high sewing," and is the term reserved exclusively by those European fashion houses that offer made-to-measure apparel in or around Paris. Following strict guidelines regarding number of pieces shown per collection and number of collections shown per year, current members include venerable fashion houses like Balenciaga, Chanel, Hermès, and Valentino. More specifically Couture clothes are those that are fitted and sewn specifically for a client, often requiring several fittings for an exacting fit. The clothes may be specifically designed for the client, such as a one-of-a-kind wedding dress or a one-of-a-kind red carpet ensemble, or they may be part of a designer's couture collection, which are the pieces the designer shows that are available for custom fit.

My friend Michael recently told me about an Episode series called 'Signe Chanel' where cameras follow Karl Lagerfeld through a complete Haute Couture collection.

Its a series of 5 Episodes but MAN you will love it and really appreciate the work that goes into a major house Haute Couture collection.

Emma W. (& brother) for Burberry Campaign

As i flipped through this months issue of Vogue the new Burberry Campaign caught my eye. Not only because Emma Watson was on it yet again, but because it was so stunning, modern and beautiful.

A lil doggy must have!

So the other day i was looking through old albums & found the most adorable picture of my baby pup Ginny. She was probably three months old at the time and was taking a rest after her eccentric owner (*cough*Me*cough*) dressed her up in an outfit given to use by my funny family.

Haha... ok

Im SO not one of those owners that dresses up their dog in outfits. No. This is actually the only time i ever put a top on my pup & im SO glad i documented it. Adorable.

But the best part of this outfit?

The Chewy Vuitton...

Heidi Rocks YSL, Now You Can Too!

So as i was watching PR (Project Runway) the other night, I realized how much a just love Heidi Klums personal style. I know i mentioned i was a little disappointed with the end results of season 6 but one thing i just LOVED about watching last season was the total Klum style that dominated in every episode. She stood out in all things hair, clothes and more specifically... SHOES!

But not just ANY shoes, oh no...

she constantly wore the signature YSL Tribute pumps from the YSL Fall 2008 RTW collection and still does in 2010. If you go back and watch the season again, you will see that she wears these pumps in almost every episode!

Holiday Monday Special!

Happy Holiday everyone!

Heres a fun DIY 'Do It Yourself' Fashion idea for those looking for something to do on this holiday Monday!

This is my version of the now popular
'Ruffled/Rosette Sleeve T'

Instructions below.
Need a closer look?
Click on pics to enlarge for a more detailed view!

To begin, YOU WILL NEED:

- Simple Black T in your size
- 1/2 Yard of Black Chiffon
- Scissors, Needle & Thread

Don't know how to thread/knot a needle?
No worries. Click Here.

Step 1:

- Cut the 1/2 yard of chiffon down the middle so that you have two 1/4 pieces.
- Along raw edge, make 1/2 inch incisions every 2 to 3 inches. These will be your markers when you rip through chiffon.

Step 2:

- Hold either sides of chiffon at snipped points and rip cleanly till the end.

- You will be left with many raw edge strips. We WANT the raw edges. This adds its alluring texture.

Step 3:

- Gather rectangle strips and cut them in half with scissors so that you have more square like pieces to work with.

Step 4:

-When creating the rosettes or ruffle pieces, the styles & ways of creating them are endless. Here are a few ideas.

- Pinch and twist a longer style square with your fingers to create a rounder rosette.

OR

-Layer two square pieces like shown & twist them to a point. The acute edges will pop out and give an edgy feel if you choose this style. Do BOTH!

Step 5:

- While you have these rosette pinched to a point, use your threaded/knotted needle to secure the end of the rosette.
- Using your thumb to secure the rosette in place, thread the needle through it about 3 times before knotting it.

WALLLLAAAAA!
You are done!

FEW TIPS:

Start from shoulder line and secure ruffles/rosettes evenly from front to back of sleeve. Meaning if you do one on the front, do the same sized one on the back.

Watch a film or old movie while doing this tutorial. Sewing the rosettes take some time so enjoy yourself.

As a new year begins, i look to those little details throughout the day that keep me inspired in the craft i love...

Recently, my wonderful sister-in-law gifted to me a 'Handbag A Day' calendar. I placed it on my vanity table so that every morning i wake up to an inspiring piece of art beckoning me to come learn & admire.

Each day a new bag. Each day a new inspiration.

Not to mention it teaches you about the bag, the year it was made & who the designer is. These pieces even gave me inspiration for the collection im designing. Each bag is so unique that they always give you a new perspective on what is 'Trend' and what truly is 'Art'.

This Calendar is actually an adapted from Anna Johnson's sensational bestseller Handbags.

I also heard there is an all SHOE calendar roaming around as well ... can you imagine? I must investigate!

In any case, I love this calendar & feel its a great little detail to have around to really inspire your day. If your going to have a calendar then this one is the one to get!

Pronounced A-sos, asos is the largest UK online-only fashion and beauty store for BOTH MEN & WOMEN. ASOS stands for "As Seen on Screen" and it truly stands by this principle!

I know, sad right?

At a moment like this i think back to a quote by Rebecca Bloomwood from Confessions of a Shopaholic...

"You know that thing when you see someone cute and he smiles and your heart kind of goes like warm butter sliding down hot toast? Well that's what it's like when I see a store. Only it's better.... A man will never love you or treat you as well as a store. If a man doesn't fit, you can't exchange him seven days later for a gorgeous cashmere sweater. And a store always smells good. A store can awaken a lust for things you never even knew you needed. And when your fingers first grasp those shiny, new bags... oh yes... oh yes"

Thats how i felt the first time i walked into the Banana at the Trolley mall. I knew in my mind that it contained the same things as the other Banana's but it was the first one i went into ALONE & at that moment i felt so adult, so fancy because if the chicness that Trolley brings to every store it contains...

That was years ago and now due to the recession and the end of the holidays, we must now say goodbye to this Banana.

Same situation with Ann Taylor except that we had just met about 4 months ago (I don't go to fashion place that much). I have gotten some awesome pieces from this store but all too soon we must say goodbye to this little treasure as well..

Of course im being way over dramatic with a tinge of sarcasm but i am sad to see these stores that have been around for years, suddenly pop up and leave due to the recession.

But we must not be sad and reap the rewards.

They both have informed me that they will be having many liquidation sales throughout the month so be sure to head over to both locations, throughout the month and see if you can find a steal of your own.

Music + 3.1 Phillip Lim = A Classy, Edgy Look!

So Im flipping through my cable channels this morning.

You know, just relaxing, seeing what on.

As I quickly distract myself with a sip of water i turn back around to find the following video appear on my screen...

I was left blinking when it was all over.

I wasn't sure who the artist was, being a CutCopy/Passion Pit girl myself, all i knew was:

--The song was catchy! Gets stuck in your head.
--The video was visually well done, video editing i mean (I'm a sucker for all things visually enticing). But most important ...

--She was wearing the new trend of STUDDING that is taking over this coming season.

To be more specific, shes wearing th Studded 3.1 Phillip Lim top i had been admiring from his Holiday 2009 collection for a couple months now... drool. I have been a 3.1 Phillip Lim fan since his debut in 2005. What i loved that in his Holiday 2009 Collection he used a lot of antique studding throughout all his pieces.

Besides the top check out the studded leggings!

This would be a great piece to wear with a baggy shirt and a pair a flats or pumps depending on the mood.

This trend of studding is all over the runway and in stores. Its a look that must be attempted with class since studding can look way cheap if done the wrong way. The best way is to mix one simple signature studded piece with a clean silhouette that lets that item stand out.

I did my undergrad in Music and so the combining of both majors, music and fashion, really warms my heart because they do go hand in hand.

Bye bye 2009... hello 1940?

Hello again my fellow stylistas.

Is today really the last day in 2009?

Let's finish of this year with another awesome find/post.

Before that, i hope you've been having a wonderful holiday and that your sweet temperaments equaled many gifts and goodies under the tree. Soon this holiday madness will be behind us (Sad!) but to fill the void many after holiday deals and steals will be appearing (Yay!).

Remember, don't just go out there and spend on the random, spend on pieces that will enhance your wardrobe and dress up your old looks to make them new again.

One item i have been crazy about is a classic piece from the past that had returned in a big way, reiterating the truth that classic items DO remain 'timeless' over the years. What is this lovely, sexy, classy item i can't get enough of and just had to get my hands on this season?

The 1940's back seam tights.

I seriously hadn't seen these since the last time i popped "Gentleman prefer Blonds" into the DVD player. Those of you who enjoy 1940's, old Hollywood films, like "White Christmas" or "The Band Wagon" will notice these tights on the dancers and leading ladies through out the film!

BRIEF HISTORY
Back seam stockings came into style in the early 1920's and were originally made of Silk like most hosiery of this time. It wasn't till 1935 that Dr. Wallace Hume Carothers invented the nylon fiber. After a few years of refining the nylon fiber, it was released into the commercial world. New nylon hosiery then took a whole life of its own when they appeared in stores in the early 1940's as it became a hot ticket item.

With the Great Depression of 1929 and WWII (which lasted from 1939 to 1945) the production of this new nylon hosiery just about stopped in the united states. Nylon was now being used for military purposes for making tents, tiers, ropes and ponchos.

So much was happening in our little country that its no wonder that nylon hosiery production was put in the back burner. This didn't mean the demand for them wasn't around though.

Actually women still craved to own the popular nylon look. Not all women could afford this small luxury so many became resourceful and would use make up to give the elision of the Back Seam found on the highly demanded Nylon tights (Picture above).

Many designers when designing find inspiration from the past. I got curious and did some research on how this 'back seam' has inspired hosiery of today.

JONATHAN ASTON

The famous UK based hosiery brand, Jonathan Aston, has recently come out with some tights that totally fall into this category. Below are some of my favorites they have designed in the past 2 years which were inspired by this "back seam" look.

Having a signature tailored hairstyle is right up there with wearing the right kind of supportive underwear and being honest about your REAL clothing size. They all tie in together to form the perfect slim look from head to toe... so lets talk about the head part.

One of the reasons why i really haven't blogged about hair yet is because we all have our own styles and ways of dealing with our lovely tresses. We also don't all fit the hair 'norms' as much as the hair industry wishes we did. But ive recently been receiving emails asking if i know any tips or tricks when it comes to hair so im going to do my best to fill you in on what i know!

On this blog, when it comes to tips, i usually will recommend things that have worked for me or my colleagues so that you can make have someone's first hand experience to learn from before you try things out yourself. So as i share, just keep an open mind and try things out and see if they work for you... lets continue.

I recently was asked if my hair was naturally straight... :) nope. Like most women i use a straightener but not just any straighter. I have realized in my journey to find the perfect straightener that there are a lot of awful tools out there that end up ruining your hair more than fixing it.

How To Use A Flat Iron:

(CHI being used in picture)

-- Brush your newly dried hair to remove any tangles. Apply a small, dime-sized amount of a hair serum before any heat styling. Divide the hair into sections and butterfly clip your hair to the top of your crown, leaving the hair around your neck loose and ready to style. This is especially important if you have thicker hair or a lot of layers to your style.

-- Take an inch to two-inch section of the loose hair and starting about an inch from the roots, slowly pull the flat iron down the length of your hair. Try not to work too high towards the roots, as it will have a flattening effect. Do not pull too hard or too fast as well. Take your time!

So since Christmas seems to be JUST around the corner i thought I would share a cool tip on gift giving... well more gift wrapping and where to get the best price.

When this beautiful season rolls around our hearts are full and our pocketbooks low, but can you blame us? Any excuse to do a little shopping is a valid one but shopping during this season for those we love seems to be the most rewarding. We take the time to find the 'perfect gift' no matter the cost and soon find ourselves with little to spare in coin when considering the packaging of our well thought out gift.

In past years I have even recycled old birthday bags or spend way to much on wrapping paper at the grocery store.... well NO MORE.

(Same wrapping paper as my local smiths but more variety FOR JUST $1)

I have learned that most grocery store or pharmacy locations (wallgreens, rideaid), where i seem to purchase my holiday trims, buy mainly from the same suppliers... including ALL A DOLLAR STORES. Thats right! No need to spend $4 or $5 on gift wrapping anymore if you can get the same stuff at your local Dollar store.

I recently went to my local Dollar Tree location and check out all the great quality items i found to wrap my gifts with this year:

These tin boxes make great gift containers without the use of tape or scissors. Just $1 each and they get pretty big.

The variety of Christmas bags were beautiful. Those and the gift tissue were YUP $1 compared to the big superstores who sell their gift bags for $2.99 or more.

Getting some a gift card? Well these gift card boxes will add just a little more festivity than a simple envelope. $1 each.

You cant have a gift without the gift tags! They have HUGE variety of sticker tags, tape and ribbon... just $1 PEOPLE!

If a garment is your gift, or in my case a garment i have made for someone, these boxes with meet your gift wrapping need! They come in packs of three and are also just $1. All you need is some tissue and your set.

Whats a gift without a bow? My dollar store sold these fancy kind in sets of 4 or large bags or ribbons which were the same brand my local grocery store carries. They weren't $2.99 though...

Let it snow, let it snow, let is SNOW!

The snowy season has now just started in the state where were known for our slopes, skiing and lodging. Im excited to have a white Christmas this year and I truly am embracing the snow as it now gives me reason to bring out my heavy fancy coats and winter accessories that have been hiding at the back of my closet most of all this winter.

One accessory that i love? SCARFS!

And even though i have many of them i think there is one that every fashionista shouldn't go without this season.

The Burberry scarf was introduced to the fashion world in 1967 sporting Burberry's renown print of the haymarket check or the "Burberry classic check". Since then it has expolded in the fashion world as a classic accessory for the winters. These scarves come in both wool and cashmere.

And since celebs most times start these classic trends in was no surprise to see Amanda Bynes sporting this scarf this season. She is wearing the soft pink print version.

Today, my December Vogue arrived.

Oh yes it was a typical day... dropped off the hubs, rocked out to a little GaGa in the Jeep, went to Starbucks. So when i got home to find Cait Blanchett peering up at me from my tiny mail box I was all to pumped to see what Anna Wintour was serving for dinner this time!

I love Vogue for it's informative articles and promising trends but the truth is i BUY Vogue for the crazy editorial spreads in the back! Its like Art/Photography/Acting/Fashion all rolled up into one.

Those who know me know i have two passions in my life: Music and Fashion.

This months Vogue emphasis the performing arts!

Lady GaGa is also featured as she plays a part in the fairy tale story of Hansel and Gretel in a edgy fanciful spread!

Once upon a time...

In a lifetime far far away,

From Paul Poiret to Chanel the first kings and queens of fashion defined our industry from early on. These individuals proceeded to teach other designers instructing them in the old ways and traditions in clothing construction...

As time has passed these traditions have faded away. Those designers who have remained who were taught in the old ways (like Karl Lagerfeld or Oscar) are now far and few between.

(Valentino Garavani was born in 1932
and debuted his own line in 1962!)

Valentino was one of these pioneers in fashion who really worked to create his own voice and mark on the industry.

When i read the title to his documentary 'Valentino The Last Emperor' I truly do believe that. I don't think he is the last emperor but he sure was one of the remaining ones.

You should all watch this documentary as it shows this mans true gift and love of fashion. This documentary explains why he left and really gives you an inside view into how much work really does go into this art we call fashion.

Even though its on video, lets face it, we're not all going to go out there purchase it let alone go drive out in the cold and rent it. No it won't ever happen unless its at your finger tips... so this is why you love me.

His show was so futuristic. I love that he always thinks outside the box as a designer. You always expect to see a show that takes you out of your element.

The prints he created were out of this world, literally, and he really just enhance simple sillouettes making them unique. Each piece was really an ART piece.

He always inspires me to think outside of my element as he always shows something no one has ever seen before. I love his creative mind!

This is a woman you HAVE to know. Shes like the Madonna of the fashion world and just like Miranda on The Devil Wears Prada, she can make or break a designers career.

The documentary goes into the making of Vogues fall September issue which is the most important of all Vogue issues, particularly in the movie it focuses on the making of the Fall 2008's September issue. It marks the beginning of the fashion season and introduces all the new trends.

What captivates me about this woman is how much power she has! Everything we see in vogue influences what we'll be wearing or buying this year. She has huge control over the direction of this industry.

Tip -- Greasy Hair Quick Fix!

How many times have we seen this?

A celeb (like Fergie) arrives on the scene with flawless hair and make up! The same week we catch our 'flawless' celeb sporting a greasy hair mess seeming to have found no time for a shower since her last appearance...

Might sound silly but how many times has this happened to US?

Lets face it, we might not be celebs but we sure know how busy life can get and as we get caught up in appointments, school, work and sleep, days seem to go by since our last shower.

These are the morning we wake up and realize that we DON'T have time to shower and we need to get out the door fast. These are the morning when we start rationalizing thinking, "oh no one will notice the greasiness" or "A pony-tale will do the trick".

Um, people will notice, you know YOU always do pony-tale or not!

Not to fear my ladies (and long haired men) heres a few quick fix tricks to save you for those few hours before your next shower.

1. TRANSLUCENT POWDER

We all have some in our make up bags. It sets our make up for the day and can also save us from looking greasy too!

Application:
Use the same powder brush you use to apply a thick amount of powder to your roots and your hair line around your face. All the greasy areas.

2. BABY POWDER

Baby powder works great too!!! The only thing that holds me back from using this all the time though is because it does carry a sent and is a bit messy when applying.

Application:
So when i use baby powder i also use the same or an old powder brush. Apply a thick amount of powder to your roots and your hair line around your face. All the greasy areas.

3. DRY SHAMPOO

Oscar Blandi pronto, dry shampoo. $19

Dry shampoo is the salon's version of a grease fixer. It works way great but is a bit on the pricey side! This Oscar Blandi pronto, dry shampoo works with natural ingredients to get the dirt and oils out. Try this one out if you can afford it.

Application:
Apply, using the end of bottle, to your roots and your hair line around your face. All the greasy areas. Use your fingers to rub in product. Brush out and style as needed.

All the tricks above work and will save you from looking gross when your in a hurry to get ready and get going with the day. Ive been there and i know you have too! Enjoy and let me know what works for you!

Basic Clothing Care Tips -- For ALL Fashionista's.

On this post were going to learn the basics of clothing care.

Well, my basics on clothing care anyway.

As we shop & constantly add new items in our closets, its inevitable that we will have to clean them sooner or later.

The following info and tips have really worked for me and have doubled the lifespan of my clothes -- specifically tops. That way you can buy which ever one's you like, made with whatever fabric, found in whatever store you like to shop in!

Now im not going to tell you that you have to be tag conscious and know all the time what your clothes fabric DNA is made up of. I would recommend to stay away from polyester unless its in a blend but thats just me.

Truth be told, whether you buy it at the Gap or Forever 21, most clothes are made up of many different combination or types of fabrics. The great stores sometimes carry poor quality and the mediocre store sometimes carry great quality. Its a world of mixed textiles, many man-made like the purple cardigan shown in Pic above from Forever 21.

So what do we do? Do we become super self conscious and read every label? No. We keep living our lives and buying those items that make us look fab.

Heres another question...

Should we then be a stickler about the care instructions on the tag?

Yes and No.

DidYouKnow -- That U.S. clothing manufacturers are required by law to provide care labels on all apparel? So half the time most manufacturers who make items for a store in bulk and low quality really don't know the real 'care steps' that go into that specific item. Lame no?

Many of the items i buy are made up of many different materials like Silk, 100% Cotton or a blend like the items whose tags im showing in the pics above.

Below im going to share with you my tips in maintaining Tops and Jeans. Read carefully & keep an open mind.

CARE TIPS: TOPS

1. I first begin by turning all items inside out and dividing my tops into darks, colors and lights.

2. WASHING - I wash these three separate groups in the same manner in three different washes. Always ALWAYS in Gentle or Delicate Cycle. Its the steps that follow the wash that are a bit different being determined by color, material or detailing.

4. I use a different detergent for each & what pray tell is my detergent of choice? Woolite of course! I have been using this brand for the last 5 years and i absolutely LOVE it. It was when i was buying my own cloths for the first time that i realized how important it was to invest in a good detergent.

Woolite comes in three different detergents: For All Fabrics, For All Colors and For All Darks. I haven't tried the For All Colors one but i use the one shown below for all my colors and lights.

IT'S MAGIC and works for me... Im to scared to risk my clothes to try anything else so if you have other detergents that you love and work for you, send them my way.

4. DRYING -- Now here's where it gets a bit complicated.

- If its cotton or a mix of cotton i usually dry it like normal in the dryer.

- If it has some detailing, like a shirt with an applique or a cardigan or structured jacket, i usually lay it out to dry on a counter or hanger.

5. Ironing -- Now heres one of my tricks. No matter how i dried it (laid out, dryer) i always ALWAYS iron my cloths. The iron is not just for collard shirts! The reason i do this? Many fabrics like cotton or polyblends start pilling, growing the little balls on it. Ironing sets these back in place making your top look like you got it yesterday.

Tip - If there's any type of plastic printing (like a pattern or a giant OLDNAVY) then turn it inside out to iron or you'll melt it. Believe me.

This way of washing and taking the extra step of ironing (yes even with basic T shirts) will double the life of your tops.

CARE: JEANS/ALL DENIM

With Jeans i repeat steps 2 and 3 (Washing in Gentle Cycle and using Woolite) but i use the woolite that is meant for darks. This detergent has seriously kept my $100 Dark Wash jeans looking like new for the longest time, 2 years for one of my jeans!

This is important because Jeans can sometimes be an investment and you want to get the most use you can out of them.

3. I dry all my denim by laying it out that way they don't shrink in the dryer.

4. Then of course i iron them out using some starch to set the shape again.

Clasic Staple -- Handbags!

Who here can't function without the daily use of a handbag?

Um, if your a true fashionista then NONE OF YOU CAN.

In all its forms (clutch, tote, S, M, L) the handbag is really the multifunctional accessory to have! but function and basic practicality are not the only reason why the handbag is one of the most important style staples in our growing fashion wardrobes. Lets face it, if that were true we'd be in sweatpants all day and your wouldn't be reading this post right now.

A handbag or whatever your using to carry around your items (yes even the bag your using to carry your school items in) really is an outward expression of who you are as a fashionista. Yes, it's a style statement which (whether you like it or not) defines you as and your style. Remember, first impressions say a lot about you and what your wearing is a huge part of that.

But lets not get to serious here, the handbag IS STILL just an accessory that we should play with. So whatever your deciding to carry along side you, let it express the different sides of your ever changing styles.

Here are TheStyleManor's top 3 guidelines and advice on handbags:
(Remember these are just my tips, take it or leave it)

Most of the readers of this blog are in school right now which means we use some form of item to carry our notebooks or supplies in. Now i have a little thing against women using backpacks. I know, what could i possibly have against a typical backpack.

I just believe that unless you are 14 or a freshman in college where you are taking many intense courses a day which require you to carry around five 10 pound text books which make you feel the only way to function is by becoming a pack-mule *Takes Breath* then no, i see no reason why you should be using a typical, frumpy backpack.

Come on. Style has developed Just Enough to accommodate to the twenty first century woman's style, school needs. Below are some OTHER options outside of the backpack.

I think we should only spend the real bug bucks (whether that's $100 or $1000 to you) on just ONE of the handbags we own. More on that on the next post. Outside of this isolated handbag we should have fun with the other handbags we own. Invest in four to five fun pieces that will tie or compliment the outfits you have right now.

Just don't got crazy weird, make sure the handbags your investing in are stylish and classic enough to last you 1 to 2 years or 4 seasons.

-- Have a solid colored handbag. Yellow, Green, Orange, Red, Blue... or any color that's NOT in NEON will do! These will stand out and compliment your well put together handbag.

As many of you know i am an avid collector of designer bags. It takes lots of saving but that's what you got to do if your coveting the real deal. I currently own two real designer handbags (An LV & Chanel). It took me about 4 years to collect these beauties seeing that a real designer handbag cost about two months worth of rent or more. Eeeek.

Authenticity is important to me but that's not the case with everyone which is just fine! Not everyone reading this blog right now can tell a fake from the real deal unless they've been educated as such. Lets face it, if the replica is amazing then why sweat out the big bucks for the real thing unless your a fashionaholic like me :D

If you do want the real thing my best advice is to save (Christmas and birthday's money) and head to the real authentic designer boutiques to purchase it. THE ZONE -- Christian Dior - The man that influenced a generation.

He created a look that changed a generation and influenced our future, so for that i think we should all know or learn a little something more about this legendary mogul,

Christian Dior

Christian Dior was born in 1905 in France. Growing up his parents had hopes that he would have a political career. They influenced him on that note so the young Dior went to school to study just that, politics, at the Ecole des Sciences Politiques. Christian had other desires for himself and wanted to work in the arts. With his fathers help he opened up an art gallery before WWII changed everything.

With the downfall of his gallery, Dior went out to sell his art and fashion sketches to anyone who would buy them, i also read somewhere that he sold them for like .10 cents a pop! OMG i would love to have purchased one back in the day! Anyway, the couturier Robert Piguet soon then employed Dior as a design assistant at his new couture house.

When WWII came on the scene, Dior went on to serve in the french army till France surrendered. After that he was offered a job by French couturier Lucien Lelong. Christian Dior then spent the rest of the war dressing the wives of French collaborators and Nazi officers.

Christian of course wasn't satisfied with just that though and soon found Marcel Boussac, a textile industrialist who really believed in Diors vision of reinventing a new look for the postwar world.

So in 1946 Dior opened up his own couture house. Dior felt that women after the war were in ripe condition for something new, a CHANGE, and so he created the famous Dior New Look.

"New Look"

Diors new look was simple yet classically chic. Broad shoulders with a snitched waist followed by a full large A-Line Skirt. This was the look that defined the 40's and 50's and it all came from DIOR's creative mind! Crazy no?

Marcel Boussac the investor, especially liked his new look because the new look required a LOT of fabric which was his business. He saw a great future with Dior.

His new look premiered to mixed reviews since many people in Europe were still a little hard on accepting anything new.

America on the other hand embraced it and many celebrities flocked to Diors doors to acquire this bold, glamorous look.

Dior became famous for his A line and Y line skirts and suits. Don't know what that is? Below is a little diagram explaining it.

Christian Dior too had sound commercial instincts TOO. When a US hosiery company offered Rouët the then-enormous fee of $10,000 for the rights to manufacture Dior stockings, the couturier proposed waving the fee in favor of a percentage of the product’s sales thereby introducing the royalty payment system to fashion. (r)

Christian was at the peak of his career when he died in 1957 of a heart attack (which some people claim he died differently)

He left a huge business for his young assistant to take over and you won't believe who his young assistant was! A young Yves Saint Laurent! YES!!! Yves Saint Laurent was 21 at the time of death of Dior.

Yves Saint Laurent actually made the next collection 9 weeks after Diors death to much appraisal and success.

His new take on Dior was much a success but the CEO's of now the brand didn't like the new ideas. Laurent was enlisted in the army and soon the brand found other replacements. What would they have done if they knew what this young man would have become?

The brand has not changed much over the years as it still retains its classic feel thanks to the designers who followed Dior. The house has now had the following head designers for successors:
Marc Bohan 1960
Gianfranco Ferre 1989

AND NOW
John Galliano 1996

Im going to do another whole post on John because he is an amazing designer on all his own that you should know.

To this day though he keeps the spirit of Dior alive is bringing back Diors classic looks.

Christian Dior will always live on an an influential mogul in style and in changing how fashion does business. You like the 40's waist that keeps coming back every season? You can thank Dior for that!

Its been a while since ive last been on but life and getting ready for school has been keeping me busy as im sure most of you can relate. AnyWHO I have an awesome craft idea i wanna share with you today.

I love collecting pins and brooches. The other day I was cleaning out my closet and i found two pairs of suede heels ive hardly worn. As i considered giving them away or tossing them out, an idea sparked on how i could revamp my shoes to make them look like new again. By simply adding a chic accessory it would give them a new life and i could wear them again.

I seriously though EVERYONE needs to try this
so below i have an example of what im talking about.

CRAFT TIME
1. I actually wanted to start from scratch on this project so today i've chosen a simple flat. I headed out and found these stunning purple, satin flats which i knew would look amazing with a pair of cameos i have had for a while

2. When looking for pins remember that it doesn't HAVE to be just pins. You can use brooches, old big earrings you love but don't wear anymore, necklace brooches, large earrings... just about anything that you think is stunning and would stand alone as the signature of your shoe. Buy 2.

3. I glued them on with a hot glue gun...

4. Pressed and made sure to center it.

TADA. BEAUTIFUL!

THE ZONE -- Erin Fetherston

On today's THE ZONE we are bringing highlight to a younger designer, a fresher face if you will, in the ever changing fashion industry.

Erin Fetherston was brought to my attention about two years ago when she first appeared in like a 'spotlight the designer' section in Vogue. When i saw her i didn't realize she was the designer, i thought she was a model modeling the designers cloths but no. The beautiful porcelain beauty you see above is Erin Fetherston -- fashion designer.

BIO
Erin grew up in Piedmont, California, and attended UC Berkeley. After graduating in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts, she headed to France. Fetherston then attended Parson's School of Design in Paris. In January 2005, she debuted her own line during the Haute Couture Shows. Fetherston recently moved from Paris to New York City. Her line has been shown in the Bryant Park Fashion shows for the last two seasons. (r)

STYLE
I would say her style of design is very VERY feminine (bows, ruffles, feathers) mixed with whimsical fantasy. Some of her past runway shows have been inspired by characters like Juliet from Romeo and Juliet. She has a very Romantic style which is why i think shes great! She the new designer IT girl and shes someone to look out for.

SHORT FILMS?
So Erin Featherston LOVES making short films that explain and kinda show the inspiration of her collection. Most are random and don't make any sense to me but i think its cool that shes such a creative mind to think like that!

Classic Staple -- Winter Coats. Get them while there hot! & still around.

This morning on my way back home from dropping of the hubby at school, i reflected back on how quickly the summers gone by and how fast the weather is changing.

As Druan Duran blasted "reach up for the sunrise" in my side car speakers, i thought to myself Ya, today there sunshine for once. Last week i swear it was raining all the time, but not just raining, it was freakn' cold too!

I hate to admit it but it has to be said.
Early Fall is upon us and soon Utah will be covered with colorful leaves and eventually snow.

The thing i do LOVE about fall and winter is the winter wear.

Oh yes, im excited for this.
You see, i love wearing boots, dark denim washes, comfy layers, scarves, long sleeve tee's and my favorite, a stylish coat. This brings me to our next classic staple. We've already talked Pumps and Jeans, now lets talk coats.

Now i know its a little early to talk about purchasing coats but you have to be thinking ahead. When those chilly days come all the fabulous coats, jackets and trenches will be gone.

Get rid of that gross thing you've been wearing the last few winters and upgrade to a piece that makes a statement. I think everyone should have a FABULOUS colored coat in there closet. A coat that is fitted and flatters their figure. The style really depends on you but MY SUGGESTION is to get a classic, timeless, well made coat that will last you at least two to three winters and through the changing fashion seasons.

PRICE
Now again this is an investment piece, meaning its ok to spend around $100 for this wardrobe staple. Your going to use this coat every day in the winter so enjoy finding your style and don't stress about the price if its reasonable.

OK. So many people assume that my favorite designer is Chanel and yes as a Designer House Chanel is great. Did you know that Chanel is a FASHION HOUSE or Design Label? These fashion houses hire talented head designers who try to relive the spirit of the original designer through the most recent collections.

But do you wanna know which is my favorite designer?
DESIGNER. Meaning an individual who designs clothes and is in full artistic control of his creative name and image?

Oscar De La Renta is without a doubt the most talented designer of our day. A name every fashion designer holds sacred. He is up there with Valentino and Carolina Herrera in timeless style and class.

I would probably give up three months rent just to buy one of his designs. Any dress i would choose would be considered timeless and i could wear 20 years from now!

'Oscar was born in the Dominican Republic and at the age of 18 left the Dominican Republic to study in Spain, where he studied painting at the Acade of San Fernando in Madrid [so he knew how to draw/sketch early on]. He quickly changed his focus to fashion' (refrence). With his immense talent he soon went on to work for the fashion houses of Balenciaga and Lanvin. In 1965 he then broke out and made his own label with much success as celebrities and chic women alike worshiped his timeless designs!

I love Oscar because he wants the woman to look beautiful and he understands what shapes, colors and fits will make you look stunning. He has this conception that women are powerful that i just love because wouldn't you want that type of person who wants to make you look confident designing clothes for you?

Classic Staple -- Finding your perfect Jean: Fit, Size and Color

Ok.
Im sure most of you can relate when i express that jean shopping is not one of my favorite shopping experiences. Not a One!

I sometimes feel i would rather buy a whole new wardrobe of blouses, earrings and shoes before i decided to first try on a jean.

First there's the hole process of finding your size, is it 2, 4, 10? Toppled with trying to figure out what style of jean is best suited for the body type you live with. It can be downright frustrating and many people who aren't a size 0-2 give up all together because it's just TOO HARD trying to make it happen.

I get it. I UNDERSTAND.
I have lived with that frustration.

But you can't hide from the inevitable, you must find your perfect fit. You MUST. A well fitted jean is a very VERY important classic staple and is incredibly versatile as you will be using it all the time!

So lets see if i can help with a few tips to make the searching a little bit more focused and enjoyable.

Disclaimer: Now All These Tips are what I, TheStyleManor, believe to be basic jean shopping guidelines. They are not set in stone or proven fact so please feel free to prove me wrong or believe something else. Im just sharing my own advice and opinion...

Tip #1
Fit & Size

I want you to be honest with yourself!
What are your 'bottom half of the body's' strengths and weaknesses?

Meaning,
are you Petite?
are you skinny straight or curvy?
do you have serious junk in the trunk or have no booty to call your own?
do you have a bit of a tummy or a flat one we all would kill for?

First, here are some GENERAL RULES
to really sear in your brain!:

Im a firm believer in dressing for the body you have NOW and not the body you say you will have when you work out and achieve in a few weeks... BLAH BLAH BLAH. NO. Dress for the body you have now!
Accept your size and move on! You will look skinnier when your wearing your right size. If you've gained weight then accept it and buy for you new size. Actually trying to fit into a smaller size will make you look FAT.
Don't follow the trends if they won't work with your body type. For example, please don't wear a skinny jean if it is unflattering on your shape, or a low rise jean when you have a tummy to conceal.
Look for darker washes. Please, the 90s are over and thank heaven for that. Don't go searching for light washes when shopping for denim since it naturally give the illusion that you look bigger than you are! This includes, fading on the thighs, weird fading lines on the hips or pockets... stuff that emphasises the bad. Step away.
PLEASE, if you have some jeans that are saggy, faded or destroyed because of use ANYWHERE on the jean (booty, thigh, to long - ripped at bottom) toss them! Remove that comfort blanket and find something that works for you now! Out with the old, in with the new.

For those who are petite

For those who are petite (like me) I just think you are going to have to face the fact that many brands and stores don't always carry petite sizes and if they do sometimes there still too long. Learning to hem or taking it to a tailor/seamstress is just part of the denim deal. Ill make sure to make a vid on how to hem jeans to help you out with this. MY POINT is, don't get discouraged when it fits beautifully everywhere else but the length is wrong. BUY IT. HEM IT.

For those who are skinny and curvy

- I think stick skinny girls should show what curves they DO have by sporting a more fitted style like a straight leg boot cut or modern skinny jean. You can also go for a lighter classic wash of denim that will naturally give the illusion of a curvy frame.

- The total OPPOSITE for you curvy girls. No light denims at all, you especially need to find a dark wash that will flatter your curves. I would recommend a wide leg trouser denim jean. The fit is what is key to this jean since is will hug your hips just enough and then fall away from the waist making you look tiny and less curvy.

For those who have junk in the trunk or no booty to call their own

- I believe those who have a booty should also go with a wide or straight leg trouser but with a high rise. Don't be attracted to the low rise fad! I find and see all the time that they cut you off at your hips as add weight to you.

- Those who are lacking booty, your in luck! Many designer denim brands carry what in fashion school we call 'but lifter' jeans. Sure their not trademarked as a booty lifter jean but i have noticed that the designer brands hug your booty and lift it up creating booty curve! great for girls who are also lacking curves too!

For those who have a bit of a tummy or a flat tummy we all would kill for!

- If you have a tummy then you are in the same group as me. The key is finding a higher waisted jean. The waist will cut across the belly button holding the bed stuff in.

- If you have a flat stomach well then i wish i was you. You feel free to try the low-rise brands which is a popular trend now a days. Try a skinny jean! You might just look stunning in it.

Tip# 2

Color

Like mentioned before, I can see that some colors like faded denims can make you look bigger than you are and add weight to you. But the opposite is true when you find the right dark washes.

Dark Wash Denim:
Everyone, EVERYONE, should own at least one dark wash jean.
I think they are so flattering and look more chic than a lighter denim. You can dress them up with the right blouse and jewelry and have a great look for a date or night out. Or just pull over a great T with pearls and have a chic look for the day time!

Best tip of all is to go out there and try stuff on! Spend a whole day if you can or just ask the hubby to watch the kids for a couple hours and focus on trying fits and stuff on.
Also, don't be afraid to ask for help. Most people who work at great jean place (Nordstrom, Dillards, Ann Taylor... boutiques) know what there talking about.

Classic Staples -- Ah, The Classic Pump!

Everyone should own a classic pair or BLACK pumps.
CLASSIC being the key term here... a shoe you can still wear 5 years from now.

Since the pumps are a neutral color (neutral meaning colors that go with everything: gray, cream/nude, brown & black) they will go with just about any outfit! Dress, skirts, denim jeans, suits, shorts... everything!

They are the dependable 'go to' shoes when your in a hurry and need to meet a friend for lunch or go to class. You can be emo, high end, classic or frumpy chic and still pull these baby's off with any outfit.
REMEMBER -- The classic pump will be a staple in your wardrobe so don't feel bad INVESTING $$$ into buying a really good pair. Quality FIRST. They will last you years if you do.

Christian makes shoes that are fun and TIMELESS.
Born 1964 Christian Louboutin is one of this centuries most influential footwear designers who launched his line of high-end women's shoes in France in 1991

He once worked as the shoe designer for Chanel but quickly became famous among celebrities and the world when he launched his own line of signature shoes.

You can always recognize a Christian louboutin shoe by the red sole on all his shoe designs... ALL of them. He said, "In 1992 I incorporated the red sole into the design of my shoes. This happened by accident as I felt that the shoes lacked energy so I applied red (Chanel) nail polish to the sole of a shoe. This was such a success that it became a permanent fixture."

Each should is handmade but designed so you can walk in them for 12 hours without beaking a sweat. That's why i think celebrities are so infatuated with his designs!
But who can blame them?

Classic Staples -- Lets start at the very beginning... a very good place to start.

Wouldn't it be awesome if we all had $5,000 to spend on a whole new wardrobe?
Ya that would be great wouldn't it?
Unfortunately we can't all be on What Not to Wear spending a week shopping with two stylish gurus of fashion who teach you all you need to know about style and fit.

*Sigh*

Building a wardrobe hard.
So i wanted to help you in this, in starting or helping you organize your wardrobe. I say lets just start at the foundation... shall we?

I believe that every wardrobe should start with the basic fashion staples. These should be considered 'investment pieces' meaning the quality of these items should be more important than the price! 'Investment Items' are just that, Investments in your wardrobe. They are the classic staples which you'll go to again and again so you should spend a little more than usual on them.

These items are:

A classic pair of black pumps.
A great fitting DARK WASH jean.
Some awesome flats.
A signature handbag that defines you.
A classic fitting neutral dress.
A really great fitting coat... no windbreakers EVER.
A good quality hair dryer, straightener &/or curling iron.
A set of really nice faux pearl studs.

Consider this the beginning of another series in addition to my 'THE ZONE' series. We'll call it 'Classic Staples'. You see, since these are investment items i thought maybe you would want to invest in some DESIGNER NAMES! LOL not all the talk about designers will be connected to these staples but most will (like when i talk about handbags, shoes and jeans!).

Calling all Project Runway lovers!

Its been way to long since I've seen this awesomely addicting show. Ive totally missed Tim's line of"Make it Work!" toppled with Heidi Klum's "Auf Wiedersehen" to the loosing contestant. Michael Kors's laugh always made me laugh and I have even gone as far as missing Nina Garcia's snotty yet smart remarks.

So i was overjoyed to see this week the sneak peek for season 6 of project runway.

Did You Know - It moved to lifetime?

Apparently there was some issues with the Bravo Network so that's why its taken a while to get reinstated! It is now going to be playing on LifeTime.

Lets talk FASHION WEEK.

Ya BABY.

Fashion week... i love just SAYING that. Total music to my ears. Lets say it again for fun! F-A-S-H-I-O-N W-E-E-K! Thanks, lol
A fashion week, no matter where its happening (New York, London, Paris, Italy) is huge major deal for the industry. It allows fashion designers or "houses" to display their latest collections in runway shows and so that buyers and editors can take a look at the latest trends. Most importantly, it lets the industry know what's "in" and what's "out" for the season.

More importantly, you have to understand that what is shown on the runway is art and usually NOT suppose to be worn by the everyday woman, but it does inspire the upcoming trends of the seasons.

Don't believe me?

Certain trends were first introduced on the runway during Fashion Week and now walk beside us in every day styles like...

The Skinny Jean -
In 2002 designers Stella McCartney, Versace, and Rock and Republic introduced the skinny jean on the runway. Sure it was flashy and extreme at the time but they soon became all the rage in 2006 after its popularity picked up 2-3 years later. Soon most denim houses made it a staple of their brand.

Or

The High Waisted Belt -
They cinch, they shape, they emphasize; designers like Oscar de la Renta and Derek Lamb focused on the area below the ribs and above the hips in 2004 with the introduction of the 'new waist'. Again this appeared FIRST in Fashion Week.

But how does fashion week work?
There seems to be one like every month, right?
Well... kinda.

The fashion capitols are London, Milan, New York, Paris.
They each have separate Fashion Weeks but all around the same time due to schedules.

Ok, so heres where it gets a little confusing or it did the first time i was trying to figure it out.
The type of question i want to address is,
why are they showing a Fall 2009 collection when its February of 2009?

(Fendi - Spring RTW 2009)

To answer this you have to understand how the magazine end of the spectrum works (From Runway to the Mag). Magazines are the most influential form of advertisement for a designer. Magazines company's usually have their monthly editions done 3 to 4 months before it (Same garment from runway shown in Vogue Australia) actually is sent for publication to be printed. Meaning, the November edition of a magazine has already been made right now in Aug. Since this is how they schedule things, Magazines need to see the fall collections and trends well BEFORE their fall Nov 2009 magazine comes out. Make sense?
This helps Mag's determine the new ideas and styles that will be dominate at that time.

So thats why collections are shown a whole season before the actual season has arrived.

LAST NOTE - Important!
You have to change the way you have thought or think about runway shows. What you see are one of a kind pieces called 'samples' so if you hear the term later you'll know its means
"One of a kind pieces that were the exact ones on the runway"

I KNOW you can't wear the runway and some designers like Alex Mcqueen (His design on the right) make some pretty crazy stuff. Look at the runway like its a walking gallery... to be appreciated and rarely if EVER worn. This mindset will open you to appreciating the art and ideas of these creative minds!

Clarysa -- Part 2

Creating MAGIC... doesn't get any better than this folks.

So its the second week on Clarysa and BOY was she demanding this week! All worth it in the end though. Of course at this point I'm not done yet but i wanted to update you on her progress.

You might remember this sad little person last week shown below pouring over what seemed like endless sections of damaged lace.

Well im now excited to report that now after 4 DAYS of tedious work, her frame looks like new again and all that's needed are a few beads to tie it all in. It was a complicated process because i didn't just cut out several appliques and glue them on. Nope. I had to actually cut the lace into small SMALL appliques and lay out a design on the gown by hand placing the lace in a manner where it looked a part of the dress and not an addition to it.

The next part was trying on the fitted top and pinning the lace while the bride was inside of it. Sorry for poking you! you were such a trooper.

I love to see my girls all happy!

Took about an hour or so to place it the way she and i wanted but well worth it!

Im so excited and have a few hours left of work before shes done but i just can't wait.

Hello my lovelies

So its been crazy the last few days... Clarysa is almost done as you can see in my post below and im proud to say that shes lookn' HOT. Im also in the works in getting a small skirt collection underway that you can buy on Esty (sketches soon to be up). But more on that later. Just wanted to let ya know where ive been. So today Im here to deliver on what i promised.

Consider yourself now entering the fashion zone. This is not a zone for the average of fashionistas... you are unlike them... you make sure that when it comes to fashion your dollar goes the extra mile. You are not defined by where you shop but on how you present and carry yourself. You are SMART and with intelligence comes knowledge.

But knowledge of what exactly? Its just clothes and stuff right?

I think that a great deal of being a fashionista is knowing about, well, fashion. Fashion is an actual industry, a HUGE business world that involves not just designers but magazines, editors, PR reps, manufactures, investors and so on and so on. Its a serious business. But some consider this industry a shallow world focused on vanity to which they are exempt. Ya... you know the type. I actually ran into one of these individuals the other day. Ok Ok, before i go on YOU NEED to see this clip below. This clip comes from the movie The Devil Wears Prada.

We find Andrea (Ann Hathaway) taking notes on an Magazine Editorial meeting where they decide the editorial spreads that will be in the next issue, which she thinks is stupid. So to recap, the trends or styles of today, whether we like them or not (I of course hate my share of trends) come from creative artists who's influences have affected the world. Um, wow that is some serious awesomeness. Your art and gifts can ultimately affect or change the world? how beautiful is that?

I for one know there are greater causes for concern in ones life than just fashion. Kids, trails, lack of money and well life gets in the way and sometimes fashion is the farthest things from any one's mind. But when all those things are taken care of, well then don't you then want to be?

This industry is an art that allows us to express ourselves and most importantly helps us feel beautiful and confident. What is so bad about feeling good about oneself? No matter how ignorant the person never let them belittle you when you are clearly smarter than them. Feeling beautiful and confident is not a crime.

Here's a Cool Idea -- Forget that boring jewelry box!

EARRINGS.

We all have them.
Besides shoes they are what i consider the BEST accessory ever. Just one pair can take an outfit from Day to Evening.

STORY TIME
The other day i was taking apart my room and i thought "Man, where have all my earrings gone?". I could have sworn i had so many but i could never find the pair i actually wanted to wear when i wanted to wear it... make sense? I soon discovered that my old huge jewelry of a box - which was covered in months of dust at this point - had swallowed most of them into the black pit of darkness it held inside.

As i bravely tore away my treasures from its fiery GRIP.... ok, ok... as i took them out one by one I got super frustrated and thought, "This is ridiculous and no way to treat my little investments". I then decided i wanted to make a frame with some kinda netting like i saw at the store once but that would be WAY expensive as i soon found out.

I have to say Luck came to me at a TJ Max store (the one in SLC is FAB and huge). As i strolled the endless isles of home goods something caught the corner of my eye. It was like a vintage bronze copper birdcage but for decoration. Suddenly i felt inspired and purchased it knowing this would work perfectly.

I had been to this jewelry store up here in SLC at Trolley Square Mall where the owner hung her beautiful jewelry on vintage birdcages. I had thought how beautiful that was and how i could have NEVER been able to afford it...

WRONG

This beautiful cage above was all of $16.

Anywhoooo, I love this new idea since it displays my jewelry like the artwork they are.

Clarysa -- Part 1

Meet Clarysa, my most recent project.

Clarysa is a vintage Marisa gown my friend bought in Seattle. With most things vintage, there's a good amount of restoration that needs to occur to bring it up to the level it once was... so that's my job. For this particular project I'm going to play the restorer.

I don't think most brides or in my case performers really comprehend how much sweat goes into making a gown. I make gowns for singers, having made the gown of my graduating recital. (My gown shown below) Ill post about that process later, making an actual gown i mean but it is serious hard work. Even though its hard i love every moment of it.

-- No matter the cost, the time or the stress, I think it absolute magic creating something out of virtually nothing but fabric. How can the mind create such beauty? Such art? I guess you can also ask a painter or a sculpturer that very same question since their materials are basic too.

I guess thats why i love watching runway too. They are walking galleries or art. Talk about the ultimate form of self expression and feel. --

Anyway, A lot of the same concepts of creating a gown goes into restoring one too.

To restore Clarysa i have to seriously study the way this she was made, down to deciphering what style and form of lace was used in the original designed (if your wondering, its Alencon lace which costs about $65.00 a YARD, eek). Last week a spent four hours driving around SLC finding locations for supplies. Ya, 4 hrs. But i found what i needed.

The process of Clarysa has begun with cutting out appliques, which are the actual lace pieces separate from the netting its attached too.

I have also been primping the gown itself, cutting out stray strings and damaged lace sections.

Ill keep you posted on the developing story of Clarysa.

I think its going to be magic when im done.
